Diasporic food experience
& Vietnamese food culture in Switzerland
Mili‘s Supperclub is a project created in 2020 to reflect the food experiments, results and findings of photographer and visual artist Thi My Lien Nguyen. The
focus lies on the diasporic and Vietnamese foodculture in Switzerland since My Lien a.k.a. Mili is of Vietnamese descendant and holds a strong connection to her roots through food.
Through the project Mili wants to share her learnings, her findings and her meals! Vietnamese food is central for any Vietnamese family – no matter where that family resides. Food is love, food is caring. That said Mili wants to share these sentiments and feelings with her guests and everyone who enjoys her homemade prepared meals.
Growing up in a Vietnamese household in Switzerland she got the Vietnamese culture, all the tips, tricks and recipes handed down by her own mother and grandmothers – to My Lien the three strongest and most resilient women she knows. Food and the way of preparing food have a deep root in her migrant family’s story.
In her artistic projects she focuses on topics around identity, belonging and the meaning of home. What does home taste to you?
The relation between food and identity places a central role in her research, as well as questions around food politics, food systems and how food can be a form of resistance against racism.
With this format Mili hopes to break existing stereotypes and clichés around Asian cuisine. By collective eating, cooking and storytelling, she invites her guests to share their own stories and experiences on the topics.
So far, the MLS has hosted dinners, supperclubs, tavolatas, performances, collaborated with various cultural workers, studios, collectives, institutions and organizations.
I hope to see you soon at any of my projects, events or formats!
With love,
Mili
